Four Ma Chung University Students Awarded Confucius Institute Scholarships

by Humas Universitas Ma Chung / 16 March 2026 / Published in Machung

Four Ma Chung University students have successfully secured scholarships from the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Surabaya in collaboration with the Confucius Institute/Mandarin Language Center at Universitas Negeri Malang. The award ceremony took place on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, during a Lunar New Year 2026 celebration themed “Warmly Welcoming Spring, Celebrating the Chinese New Year Together,” organized by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Surabaya.

This scholarship serves as both an appreciation and support for students who demonstrate outstanding achievement and commitment in their Mandarin learning. Beyond academic performance, the program requires several key criteria, including a strong enthusiasm in studying Mandarin, a commitment to continuous learning, an HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) certificate as proof of language proficiency, and active participation in various Chinese cultural activities.

Following a rigorous selection process, four students from the Mandarin for Education and Business study program were declared recipients. They are Abel Agripina, Vanessa Theodora Avery Chan, Samuel Enrico Jose Fernando, and Jennifer Wu. This success stands as a testament to the students’ dedication and hard work in developing language skills and cross-cultural understanding.

The Mandarin for Education and Business program is known for actively encouraging its students to not only excel in language mastery but also to possess strong communication skills and a deep understanding of Chinese culture. This achievement reflects the quality of education implemented at Ma Chung University.

“In the Mandarin for Education and Business program, students do not just learn the language; they also learn to understand the meanings and values of Chinese culture. Students need to understand that language is an integral part of culture,” explained Yohanna Nirmalasari, S.Pd., M.Pd., the Head of the Mandarin for Education and Business Study Program.

The scholarship provides educational funding to support the Mandarin learning process for the selected students. This support is expected to help them deepen their language abilities, broaden their cultural horizons, and pave the way for international study and career opportunities.

“Receiving this scholarship is a very joyful experience for me. I feel grateful for this opportunity. This scholarship serves as motivation to continue studying Mandarin Chinese,” said Vanessa, one of the scholarship awardees.

Dr. Kestrilia Rega Prilianti, the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, also expressed high appreciation for the achievements of these students.

“I’d love to congratulate our students on successfully receiving the Chinese Consulate General Scholarship in Surabaya. This achievement shows dedication, perseverance, and a strong commitment to developing Mandarin competence and cross-cultural understanding. May this achievement motivate you to keep growing and inspire other students to excel at the international level,” she stated.

This accomplishment is a source of pride not only for the recipients but for the entire academic community of Ma Chung University. Let us hope that this success will motivate other students to continue achieving, remain active in academic and cultural activities, and take advantage of the various international opportunities available.
